Weston High's football team won its first state championship, defeating Killingly 27-6 for the Class M title in New Britain on December 14.
The Trojans took a 7-0 lead when James Goetz connected with John Cassol for a 50-yard TD and Phoenix Parker added the extra point. Killingly pulled to within 7-6 in the opening quarter but couldn't tie the game thanks to Weston's block of the extra point kick.
Weston scored twice in the second quarter to add to the lead. Tyler Bower found the end zone on an eight yard run and scored again from three yards out. The kick following the third Weston TD was blocked but it was 20-6 Trojans at the half.
In the third quarter, Bowe scored another TD, completing his hat-trick touchdown performance with a two-yard rush for six.
Bower carried 21 times for 99 yards and Goetz rushed 15 times for 81.
Goetz completed five of seven pass attempts for 75 yards. Jack Sawyer had three receptions for 61 yards, and Cassol had two catches for 59.
