Upset-Minded: Rebels Proved Seedings Are Deceptive

The New Fairfield girls' basketball team went into the SWC tournament as the No. 6 seed and advanced to the semifinal in convincing fashion, posting a 44-17 triumph over No. 3 Pomperaug.

New Fairfield saw its tourney title hopes dashed in a 56-44 loss to No. 2 Newtown in the semis on February 24. The Rebels had pushed Newtown in a 39-35 regular-season setback less than a week earlier. In the semifinal game, they were tied at 18 apiece after one quarter of play and well within striking distance, down 34-26 at the half. NHS pulled away in the second half.

In the win over Pomperaug, Abby Flanagan had 16 points and Gabby Arterberry scored 15. Ally Teklits added six and Ava Romanello had five.

The Rebels got 16 from Sydney O'Connor, nine from Arterberry and seven from Flanagan in the semifinal game. New Fairfield went 13-7 overall and 8-5 in conference play in the regular season and will now turn its attention on the state playoffs.
