Two Upsets, One Power Outage Postponement In Girls' Basketball Playoffs

The SWC girls' basketball playoff quarterfinals featured two upsets, albeit one was a five seed defeating a four seed, and another game that was halted due to a power outage on February 21.


No. 5 Kolbe Cathedral defeated No. 4 Bethel 53-42 and will visit No. 1 Notre Dame, a 67-24 winner over No. 8 Bunnell in the Monday, February 24, semifinals at 7 pm. See below for photos from the game; Watch video of action here.


No. 6 New Fairfield defeated No. 3 Pomperaug 44-17 and will take on the winner of No. 2 Newtown and No. 7 New Milford in the other semi.


Newtown led New Milford 37-12 when a power outage caused most of the gym lights to go out at halftime. The game will be resumed at NYA Sports & Fitness in Newtown on Saturday, February 22 at 9 am.


Kolbe fell behind early but seized a 26-20 halftime lead against Bethel. Brianna Meekins finished with 17 points and Robin Selitte had 10. Bethel got 22 from Maranda Nyborg, nine from Brooke Lacey and eight from Vicky Gracy.


The championship game is set for Wednesday, February 26, at 7 pm, at a location to be determined.
