Trojans And Hawks Blow Out Opponents, Rebels' Solid Season Ends

December 4 was a good night for SWC football teams Weston and Newtown which won their state tournament quarterfinal-round games with relative ease.

In Class M, No. 5 Weston toppled No. 4 Abbott Tech/Immaculate, at neutral site Brookfield High, 49-6.

Weston will visit top-seed Rockville in the semifinals on Monday, November 9; kickoff is 6:30 pm. The winner will face either No. 2 Waterford or No. 3 Killingly in the December 14 championship. Killingly shut out No. 6 New Fairfield 28-0.

Weston quarterback James Goetz completed four of six pass attempts for 138 yards and two touchdowns, and also ran three times for 70 and a pair of scores.

Jack Sawyer had three receptions for 122 yards and a pair of TDs. Tyler Bower carried 13 times for 102 and a couple of TDs.

Brad Barrcello rushed nine times for 179 yards, John Cassol rushed for a touchdown and had 15 yards on the ground, Hayden Lawrence had a 14-yard reception, and Brendan Sawyer rushed once for 16 yards to help Weston's offense accumulate 419 total yards.

Newtown, the top seed in Class LL, shut out No. 8 Norwich Free Academy. Brandon Lombardo ran for a pair of TDs, one following a James Knox fumble recovery, and Miles Ricks scored on a fourth-down run as the Nighthawks built a 21-0 halftime cushion.

In the second half, Jack Street threw a TD pass to Luke Hannan, and Connor Breslin rushed for a score.

Newtown will host No. 4 Simsbury in the semis, set for Monday December 9, at 6:30 pm. The winner faces either No. 2 Southington or No. 3 Darien in the December 14 title game.

The New Fairfield football team saw its season end in the state playoff quarterfinals.
