Pomperaug To Host Playoff Double Header; State Update For All SWC Schools

Winter only feels like it is has arrived but we are in fact approaching the fall season finish line and getting closer to championship weekend. Several SWC teams continue their quests for titles. Pomperaug High will host both field hockey and girls' soccer on Thursday, November 14. Here is an update on where things stand for SWC schools through action on November 13:

Girls' Soccer

Pomperaug's third-seeded girls' soccer team will host No. 14 Naugatuck in the second round of the Class L bracket on Thursday at 5 pm.

In other Class L soccer play, No. 6 Brookfield will visit No. 1 RHAM at 2 pm and No. 26 Barlow heads to Madison Surf Club to take on No. 23 Daniel Hand at 6 pm. It was discovered that No. 7 Berlin used an ineligible player against Barlow in the first round and had to forfeit the game.

A trio of Class M girls' soccer teams are in action on Thursday as No. 4 Weston hosts No. 13 Woodland at 5 pm, No. 7 Notre Dame hosts No. 10 Watertown at 2 pm, and No. 25 New Fairfield travels to No. 9 Ellington at 2 pm.

Boys' Soccer

In Class LL No. 13 New Milford went to overtime before falling to No. 4 Naugatuck 4-2 in the second round on November 13.

In Class L, No. 15 Barlow blanked No. 2 Platt Tech 6-0 and earned a visit to No. 10 Wilton in Friday's quarters at 2 pm. Also in L action, No. 12 Pomperaug earned a victory over No. 5 Fitch, prevailing 2-1 (5-3 in penalty kicks). Pomperaug will visit No. 4 Daniel Hand in the quarters on Friday at 2 pm. No. 16 Bunnell lost 3-0 to top-seed Bristol Eastern and No. 24 Masuk fell 4-0 to No. 8 Guilford.

In Class M, No. 11 Weston fell 4-0 to N0. 6 Granby. In Class S, No. 15 Immaculate doubled up No. 2 Litchfield 2-1, earning a spot in Friday's quarters. The Mustangs will host No. 23 Old Lyme at 2 pm.

Field Hockey

No. 1 Newtown blanked No. 17 Hamden 6-0 in Class L play. NHS will host No. 9 Norwalk in the quarterfinals on Friday at 5 pm. No. 13 New Milford, which had beaten No. 20 Southington 4-0 in the qualifying round, fell 4-1 to No. 4 Staples in the first round.

In the Class M bracket, No. 4 Pomperaug shut out No. 13 Sheehan 3-0. Pomperaug will host No. 5 Branford at 2:30 pm on Thursday. Branford had beaten No. 12 Masuk 4-0. No. 14 Bethel defeated No. 3 East Lyme 1-0 and will visit 11 Suffield Thursday at 5:30 pm. No. 18 Barlow, coming off a 2-1 double OT win over No. 15 Killingly in the qualifying round, lost 1-0 to No. 2 Wethersfield.

In Class S No. 3 Immaculate will host No. 6 North West Catholic Thursday at 2 pm. The Mustangs are coming off a 7-0 triumph over No. 14 Morgan on Tuesday. North West Catholic had beaten No. 11 New Fairfield 2-1. No. 13 Weston was beaten by No. 4 Westbrook 1-0 (2-1 in penalty strokes).

Girls' Volleyball

No. 19 Newtown visits No. 3 Westhill of Stamford in Thursday's second round, at 6 pm. NHS beat No. 14 Staples 3-2 in the opening round. No. 4 New Milford was edged 3-2 by No. 29 Norwalk.

In Class L, No. 9 Barlow visits No. 8 Woodstock Academy on Thursday at 5 pm. Barlow beat No. 24 EO Smith 3-0. No. 6 Masuk, after defeating No, 27 Brookfield 3-0, will host No. 11 Fitch Thursday at 4:30 pm.

In Class M, No. 12 Weston has advanced to the quarterfinal to visit No. 4 Jonathan Law of Milford Friday at 7 pm. Weston defeated 21 Sheehan and No. 5 Woodland each by 3-1 scores.

In the Class S bracket, No. 10 Immaculate has reached the quarters and will visit No. 2 Aerospace Friday at 6 pm. Immaculate had beaten No. 23 East Hampton 3-1 and No. 7 Cromwell 3-2.
