Pomperaug Field Hockey Team Had Strong Season

Pomperaug's field hockey team completed a strong season in which Coach Anne Strobel believes a nice foundation has been established for campaigns to come.

With only a trio of senior starters the Panthers leaned heavily on underclassmen but it was far from a rebuilding year.

The Panthers went 10-4-1-1 in the regular season, earned the Class L state tournament's No. 4 seed, and defeated No. 13 Sheehan 3-0 in the first round before seeing the slate come to a conclusion in a 2-0 loss to No. 5 Branford in the quarterfinals on November 14.

"I was very pleasantly surprised. I didn't want to set too high expectations because I knew we were so young. I think we grew and developed really nicely as a team," Strobel said.

"The seniors left the underclassmen really feeling hungry for next year," Strobel added.

Pomperaug's seniors who provided leadership on and off the field are Julianna Manson, Kari Richardson, Nageena Thind, Nicole Marino, Melissa Perelmuter and Leah Kowalasky.

Madeline Mickune, left, stick-handles away from pressure during the state playoffs.

Ava Messina controls the ball during the state playoffs.

Jessica Evans, middle, battles for the ball.
