The Notre Dame-Fairfield girls' hockey team, also representing Pomperaug Weston, Foran and Law, had an impressive week on the ice to begin the month of February.
Against No. 1 Simsbury, the Lancers battled hard. Although down 2-0 early, ND played very well and made it 2-1 in the second period with a goal by Lexie Burwell, assisted by Leigha Howland and Charlotte Dworski. Bethany Karp made 34 saves in the 5-1 loss.
Next up was a clash with Hand, and the Lancers came ready to play. Karp had her first shutout of the season with a 15 save effort, while the Lancers netted 6 goals. Rose Linkasamy had two, and Amanda Regina, Leigha Howland, Charlotte Dworski, and Jenna Johnson all had one. Assists by Sarah Casey, Maddie David, and Celidgh Pikul helped the cause.
The Lancers traveled to Guilford and went down early as they struggled to find their legs in the second of two games in as many days. Leigha Howland tied the game at one, with assists from Amanda Regina and Maddie David. After ND fell behind 2-1, Howland responded by splitting the defense with speed and got dragged down. She was given a penalty shot and made the most of it by ripping a wrist shot over the shoulder of the Guilford goalie. ND took a 3-2 lead several minutes later on a perfect tip-in by Jenna Johnson assisted by Mackenzie Broderick. Karp made save after save after save to keep the Lancers in front. Following a key blocked shot by Nicole Toth, Mackenzie Broderick assisted by Lexie Burwell for a key insurance tally. The ND penalty kill came up big with great play by Eva Hofmeister, Rose Linkasamy, and Bethany Karp, who made 60 saves.
