NHS Wins Class LL Title On Last-Second Play

Newtown's football team shocked Darien with a touchdown as time expired to claim the Class LL state championship, on Trumbull High's foggy field on December 14.

Quarterback Jack Street connected with Riley Ward on a 36-yard TD pass for a 13-7 win.

Newtown fell behind 7-0 but came from behind as Street passed to Ward for a 75-yard score in the fourth quarter.

Darien had the ball at the Newtown 25 with a chance to make it a two-score game midway through the fourth quarter, but Newtown's defense stood tall.

The Blue Wave threatened to break the 7-7 tie but was stopped on fourth and a yard to go at the Newtown 32 with 1:01 left, setting up the improbable game-deciding drive.

This is Newtown's first state title since 1992.
