NHS Edges Notre Dame In Overtime Of Soccer Championship

Newtown High School's girls' soccer team defeated Notre Dame-Fairfield 2-1 in double overtime of the November 6 championship, at Joel Barlow's field.


Sydney Howard scored when she was set up by her sister, Skylar Howard, with 6:08 left in the second 10-minute overtime.


This was Newtown's second straight conference title and the fifth-seeded Nighthawks prevented the No. 2 Lancers from winning it all in their first appearance in the pinnacle game.


Hannah Daly got Newtown on the board with a second-corner kick that deflected in off a Notre Dame player. The Lancers got even when Toni Domingos scored on a penalty kick.


Newtown defender Ally McCarthy earned MVP honors.
