The regular-season matchup was tight throughout. Top-seeded Notre Dame-Fairfield, however, dominated in the conference tournament championship clash, defeating No. 2 Newtown 70-40 at Bunnell High's gym on February 26.
Notre Dame rained 3-pointers — nine of them; four by Mac Stone, three from Nique Mayo and two from Yamani McCollough — to pull ahead early.
Stone and Mayo both finished with 18 points, and McCollough scored a dozen. Notre Dame's Erin Harris played solid defense and was named tournament MVP. Teammates Mayo and McCollough were named to the All Tournament Team as were Nighthawks Cyleigh Wilson and Amy Sapenter who had 10 points. Juliette Cryder scored eight for Newtown.
Kayla Tilus scored eight, Harris and Ciara Brown both had six, and Taylor Gibbs added two in the win.
McCollough had four rebounds, four steals and four assists. Brown grabbed eight rebounds and Harris had five rebounds.
The Lancers led 18-6 after one quarter and 37-16 at the half. They pulled away behind accurate shooting and strong defense.
"These kids executed exactly the way we wanted them to tonight," ND Coach Maria Conlon said.
An emphasis on defense was key.
"Our big thing every single day in practice is defense, defense, defense," Conlon said. "Defense wins champioships."
Notre Dame's coach credited Newtown for being a very strong team and said the Nighthawks should make a splash in the upcoming state playoffs.
