The top two seeds in the SWC boys' basketball tournament survived great efforts from their foes to advance to the championship game.
Top seed Immaculate will face No. 2 Kolbe Cathedral in the title contest at neutral site Masuk on Thursday, February 5, at 7 pm.
Immaculate overcame a 10-point deficit to defeat No. 4 Newtown 55-48 in the March 3 semifinal round. Kolbe defeated No. 3 Joel Barlow 48-42. Immaculate beat Kolbe 42-32 in the regular-season matchup.
Sebastian Parenti led Immaculate with 15 points. Joey Rios and Mike Iannetta both scored 12 in the semifinal contest with Newtown which got 17 from Jack Petersen.
Newtown led 18-3 after one quarter of play and 26-16 midway through the second. Immaculate finished the second quarter on a 14-2 run, capped by consecutive Parenti 3-pointers. Parenti had a trio of makes from downtown in the second and the Mustangs carried a 30-28 lead into the half.
The Nighthawks used a 7-0 run for a 40-36 lead but Immaculate countered with nine straight points for a 45-40 lead going to the fourth. Parenti had a 3-point play to end the third-quarter scoring.
The Mustangs answered a quick NHS basket in the fourth with seven straight points to put the game away.
