Immaculate Captures Field Hockey Championship

After a second-half goal by Emma Halas broke the ice, second-seeded Immaculate's defense did the rest to hold off fourth-seeded New Milford for a 1-0 win in the November 7 SWC field hockey championship game, held under a light rain at Brookfield High.

Halas converted off a penalty corner with 24:10 remaining and went on to earn MVP honors.

New Milford pressured with two penalty corner opportunities a handful of minutes later and created a last-minute chance on the rush. The Mustangs prevailed behind goaltender Lauren Oskam and the back line.

Victoria Bono and Caroline Brown were standouts in the back, and Halas was a force all over the field, Immaculate Coach Shannon Horosky noted

New Milford goaltender Collette Lynch helped keep her team in the game and ended up with four saves. Both teams had six corners.

"We knew we were going to have a battle," said Horosky, adding that the Mustangs expected this to be a one-goal game.

"This was very exciting," Horosky added.

The Mustangs celebrate winning the championship.

Emma Halas, left, scored the lone goal in the championship. New Milford's Julia Wheeler defends. In the background is Immaculate's Victoria Bono, who played a key role in keeping the Green Wave scoreless.
