Immaculate's boys' basketball team took a lead in the first quarter and never relinquished it despite a barrage of St. Bernard 3-pointers, posting a 66-50 win at home on January 11.
Joey Rios had 14 points and 11 rebounds, Sean Guiry scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds, Diego Echavarria had six points, 11 rebounds and seven assists, Sebastian Parenti dropped in 17 points and had a trio of assists and Michael Iannetta added eight points an d eight rebounds in the triumph.
Joey Rios converted a 3-point play the old fashioned way for a 7-4 lead for two of his nine first-quarter points as the Mustangs seized a 17-13 lead.
St. Bernard opened the second-quarter scoring with one of its 10 shots from downtown, making the score 17-16, but that was as close as the visitors got.
Iannetta scored a pair of baskets down low to help extend the lead to 26-18. A Guiry straight-away 3-pointer made it 31-22 and the Mustangs built a 34-24 halftime lead.
St. Bernard began quarter number three with consecutive 3-points to slice the lead in half, but one of Parenti's two 3-pointers in the quarter helped push the lead back to 10 at 40-30.
After St. Bernard again cut the lead in half, the Mustangs again responded. Guiry had a baseline drive for two points and J.P. Miranda's 3-pointer from the left elbow sandwiched a St. Bernard 3-pointer for a 50-43 lead heading to the fourth. The deficit was no less than six points the rest of the way.
The Mustangs improved to 5-1 overall.
"Our kids have nothing to lose. We have a lot of new kids out on the court," Immaculate Coach Nelson Mingachos said.
But the schedule is expected to get more difficult as SWC play commences.
"We have a lot of tough games ahead of us," Mingachos said.
It all begins on Monday, January 13, when New Milford visits at 7 pm.
