Hoops: Big Run Lifts Defending Champs; More Big Games Coming Up

Mid January features some great girls' basketball matchups. On January 16, it was a rematch of last year's SWC title game as defending champion Newtown defeated Bethel 53-37. The final score doesn't tell the whole story. Newtown trailed by three points in the second quarter before reeling off 26 unanswered points, a run that spilled over into the second half. Bethel got a 23-point deficit down to nine behind a great comeback effort but couldn't get any closer against a solid defensive team.

Cyleigh Wilson scored 15 points and Amy Sapenter dropped in 13 for NHS. Bethel got 18 from Maranda Nyborg and eight from Vicky Gracy. Brooke Lacey hit a pair of 3-pointers to help get Bethel back in the game.

There are many more great games coming up:

After January 21 action, NHS and Notre Dame, the two remaining unbeatens in conference play, clash in a possible SWC finals preview. Newtown hosts the Lancers Thursday, January 23 at 7 pm.

Brookfield is coming off a 46-43 win at New Milford on January 17 and is 4-1 in the conference. The Bobcats host 3-1 Kolbe Cathedral Tuesday, January 21 and entertains Weston (3-3 going into the week) on January 23; a January 28 visit to Newtown will be here fast enough.

New Milford (3-2 in the conference) is at Bethel on January 21 for a 6 pm tip. Don't overlook Pomperaug. The Panthers are 2-2 in conference play but those losses came to NHS and ND and both games were competitive. Pomperaug visits New Fairfield (2-2) on January 21 and hosts New Milford on January 24. With exception of the New Milford-Bethel contest, all of these games are at 7 pm.

Bethel's Maranda Nyborg drives to the basket as Amy Sapenter (No. 3) and Juliette Cryder defend.
