New Milford's field hockey team upset host Newtown, the unbeaten top seed, 2-1 in double overtime of the SWC tourney semifinals on November 5.
Erin O'Hara scored on a breakaway midway through the second 10-minute OT, sending the Green Wave into the championship versus No. 2 Immaculate (Thursday, November 7 at Brookfield High starting at 7 pm).
"It felt incredible," O'Hara said of scoring the winner.
Tori Roberts opened the scoring. Shannon Kelleher tied things in the first half.
Newtown goaltender Gigi Marino and New Milford netminder Collete Lynch both came up with big saves to keep the game even.
"Our girls never quit. They never have all season. We play a very tough schedule all year to improve," New Milford Coach Dawn Hough said.
Newtown, the top team in the state's Class L rankings, certainly was the toughest the Wave faced.
"We knew it was possible," New Milford's Heather Dempsey said of earning a trip to the title game.
