The Notre Dame-led co-op girls' hockey team defeated the Masuk co-op 3-1 in a game at The Rinks at Shelton on January 15.
Jenna Johnson and Celidgh Pikul both scored a goal and had an assist for Notre Dame. Masuk team goaltender Eva Smith, a Joel Barlow representative on the multi-school team, made 45 saves.
Johnson was assisted by Amanda Regina to open the scoring. Masuk evened the score when Maya Komorowski lit the lamp off an assist from Erin Webdale late in the first period. It was a 1-1 game heading to the middle stanza.
ND struck twice in the second. Mckenzie Broderick was assisted by Sarah Casey and Pikul for a 2-1 lead. Pikul capped the scoring off a setup from Johnson, also in the second.
Notre Dame netminder Bethany Karp, a Pomperaug team member, stopped 15 shots.
ND Coach Kerri Rowland said there was great play that is not seen on the score sheet
“Backchecking, penalty killing and aggressive forechecking played a significant role in our win. Led by Leigha Howland, Justina Holland, Nicole Toth and Rose Linkasamy we finally finished a game and secured the win. We are looking forward to playing the powerhouse of East Catholic Friday, and we face The Rinks rival Trumbull on Monday,” Rowland said.
Karp piled up the saves in two previous games, a pair of hard-fought one-goal losses in early January. She made 39 saves in a 2-1 setback to Hand of Madison. Leigha Howland was assisted by Alexis Burwell and Rose Linkasamy for the ND tally.
In a 6-5 defeat to West Haven, Karp kicked aside 49 shots. Madison David and Regina both had two goals. Howland scored and added two assists, and Johnson had an assist.
