The CIAC, on April 9, responded to Governor Ned Lamont's announcement — earlier in the day — that schools will remain closed at least through May 20 due to COVID-19. (Read more here.)
According to the CIAC website: "The announcement to extend school closings through May 20th provides a timeline for the CIAC to consider regarding spring sport opportunities. CIAC administrative staff will have more detailed conversations with superintendents, principals, athletic directors, member leagues, medical professionals, and coaches over the next week and half. The CIAC Board of Control will meet on April 23 to review feedback from each group and discuss safe and realistic spring sport experiences."
Among what needs to be considered is practice time ahead of game play. Ordinarily, teams must have 10 practice days prior to games, but the CIAC will consider options to squeeze in an abbreviated season if schools open. The schedules would need significant tweaking; games were to have begun April 4 and the spring regular slate ordinarily ends in the middle of May before conference and state playoffs unfold, ending in the middle of June.
