The Joel Barlow-Weston-Abbott Tech (JBWA) hockey team battled past a tough Masuk foe 5-3 at The Rinks at Shelton on January 20.
Traditionally, hits in hockey come in the form of body checks. But it's been illness that his hit teams of late, including the flu which has left Barlow's lineup shorthanded.
"It's hit us pretty hard. It's hit the whole state pretty hard. They gutted it out tonight and I'm proud of them," JBWA Coach Bob Stearns said.
JBWA got two goals and an assist from Daniel McKiernan who set up the tie-breaking goal only seconds after Masuk tied things at 3-3. McKiernan started the circle behind the net and put a blind backhand pass in front that Dante Esposito deposited into the goal for a 4-3 edge.
The go-ahead tally came at 11:19 of the third period, on the power play, just 35 seconds after Masuk's Kyle Cirillo scored short handed on the rush. McKiernan capped the scoring with 51 seconds left, making a series of nifty moves on his way to scoring the insurance tally.
This game was all even 2-2 going to the third. JBWA went ahead only 1:11 into the final stanza when Luke Dube blasted home a slap shot, assisted by Ryan Lauter,
Moments later, JBWA goaltender Connor Sweeney came up big on a breakaway bid and subsequent wraparound try by Cirillo.
Kyle Leone, assisted by Ronan Duffy, scored the other JBWA goal. Duffy had two assists and Evan Baran added a helper for JBWA.
Masuk got goals off the sticks of Austin Braiewa and Will Brakeman. Michael Bunovsky and Andrew Labella had assists for the Panthers.
Stearns said the second-yard JBWA co-op is making strides with strong representation from all three schools.
"The kids have gotten together and started showing some great chemistry," the coach said.
This was JBWA's third win, including an 8-1 triumph over Masuk earlier in the month and a 7-1 triumph over Trinity Catholic.
Masuk was coming off a 4-3 loss to Bethel-Brookfield-Danbury and has a pair of wins, including an 8-0 blanking of Byram Hills, N.Y.
