The Notre Dame-Fairfield girls' basketball team defeated New London 63-56 in the championship game of the 26th Annual Notre Dame Catholic High School Appalachian Classic Basketball Tournament on December 28.


MVP Nique Mayo scored 17 points, Taylor Gibbs dropped in 14, and All Tourney Team selections Kayla Tilus (four points) and Yamani McCollough (13 points) helped the Lancers to victory. Erin Harris dropped in eight and Ciara Brown scored seven.


With the game tied at 36 late in the third quarter, the Lancers went on a 13-4 run to carry a 49-40 lead into the fourth.


The visiting Whalers went on an 8-0 run to begin the final stanza, pulling to within a point before Brown drained a foul line jumper for a 51-48 lead with 4:45 to play.


With the lead again down to one, Mayo sank a clutch 3-pointer (watch the video below), making it 54-50 Lancers with three-plus minutes left. Mayo drove to the basket for a 56-50 lead and McCollough went coast-to-coast following a defensive rebound to push the lead to eight with 2:28 to go, and the Lancers held on.
